TELUS Day of Service – around the globe

The Philippines

The TELUS Day of Service continues to expand globally. In the Philippines, the fourth annual TELUS Day of Service took place on October 2, 2010 where team members took one special day to give where they live. Team members built houses for the homeless, planted trees, and treated underprivileged children to a day of fun. Partnering with Gawad Kalinga (GK), TELUS International continues to build homes for deserving families in Manila. As part of the TELUS GK Village, TELUS team members have built 70 homes and a three-story multi-purpose hall in the first village and have committed to build a second TELUS GK Village with more than 130 homes.

“Since 2007, more than 2,700 team members have volunteered more than 22,000 hours of service right here in Manila, doing important work like building homes, cleaning up rivers and teaching children,” says Jeffrey Puritt, president of TELUS International, who was in attendance at the 2010 TDOS. “This is indicative of the selfless spirit TELUS International team members display on a regular basis.”

Latin America

For the second year, TELUS Day of Service events took place at TELUS International locations throughout Latin America including El Salvador, Quetzaltenango, and Guatemala City. In 2010 alone, more than 3,000 volunteers contributed over 10,000 volunteer hours helping more than 4,000 children. Focusing on youth and education, TELUS team members came together to build, refurbish and improve schools for underprivileged children. Because of such continued efforts, in 2009, our Latin America operations received the Community Hero Award by the United Way for the largest volunteer activity. And in 2010, TELUS International executives were recognized as Distinguished Citizens by the Mayor of Xela, Guatemala.

On Saturday, October 30, more than 800 team members donated their time to re-build the Centro Escolar Refugio de la Paz in Santa Tecla, a school for underprivileged children in a suburb of San Salvador. Also in attendance were members of the local government and representatives from the Canadian Embassy in El Salvador.

The next day, Sunday, October 31, over 200 team members volunteered to improve the conditions in an elementary school in Xela (Quetzaltenango), Guatemala. This was a particularly special Day of Service for Jeff Puritt, Guillermo Montano, president of TI Latin America (and CEO of Transactel, Inc.), and Marilyn Tyfting, vice-president of human resources for TI, as they were recognized as Distinguished Citizens of Xela by the Mayor.

On November 6, over 2,000 volunteers from the team in Guatemala City built classrooms and refurbished Escuela Oficial Urbana Mixta, Nimajuyu C, a public school attended by more than 1,200 local children. During the rainy season, these children have had to sit in classrooms with water up to their knees due to the poor drainage conditions that used to exist.  Thanks to our team’s efforts, this is no longer the case!  Once again, members of the local and federal government and representatives from the Canadian Embassy rolled up their sleeves and participated in the build.
